The Lagoon

Asia’s largest brackish-water lagoon.

Chilika Lake sprawls across roughly 1,100 km² along the Odisha coast — the largest coastal lagoon in India and one of Asia’s largest. Where its brackish water meets the Bay of Bengal, an extraordinary ecosystem thrives, recognised as a Ramsar wetland of international importance.

It is best loved for two things: the rare Irrawaddy dolphins that surface near Satapada, and the immense flocks of migratory birds that descend on the Nalabana sanctuary each winter. Add the island temple of Kalijai and a glassy sunrise boat ride, and Chilika is the perfect third day of any Puri trip.
